Health of supporting structures of the teeth is very important to maintain the teeth in the mouth.
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, which often results in bleeding and is caused by not removing the bacterial build up (plaque) from around the necks of the teeth just above the gum. Plaque grows on the teeth every day and teeth need to be brushed and flossed daily to control gingivitis.Gingivitis is reversible with simple education on good oral hygiene.
Periodontitis is the loss of bone from around the teeth, if the gingivitis is not treated the bacteria migrate under the gums and cause loss of the supporting tooth structure and bone, causing eventual loosening and probable loss of the teeth. Periodontitis is not usually painful and can be easily missed by the patient, a comprehensive assessment of the gums including digital images (xrays) will give a full picture of your gum health.
Gum disease needs to be continuously monitored and this can only be achieved under a regular prevention program, carried out by the hygienist under the dentists supervision.
