Braces and Invisalign

Aligning teeth offers many advantages such as

  • Cosmetic improvement
  • Easier to clean – teeth that are well aligned are easier to keep clean
  • Easier to chew and eat all foods
  • More balanced bite to protect teeth from destructive/heavy forces
  • Correct jaw relationships to protect the health and function of the jaw joint (TMJ)

At Dental Centre Buderim we offer a wide range of orthodontic services. A comprehensive dental examination will allow your dentist to advise you of any problems and suggest the suitable treatment options. Orthodontic options can either be fixed (conventional braces) or removable (plates, Invisalign)

In general, orthodontic treatment is performed on adult teeth (i.e. once all baby teeth are lost, around 12 for girls and 13 for boys). However, there are several conditions that we would like to treat earlier, around 8-10 years old. Intercepting these certain conditions can dramatically reduce the length of, or even negate the need for orthodontic treatment at a later stage.

Conventional Braces

Most people are familiar with braces as they are the gold standard in orthodontic correction. The appliance comprises of brackets or bands that are attached to the individual teeth and an archwire connecting these brackets. Those looking for a more discreet option may want ceramic brackets instead of the conventional metal brackets.

By using a series of clear, removable aligners, Invisalign straightens your teeth. The course of treatment involves changing aligners approximately every two weeks, moving your teeth into straighter position step by step, until you have a more beautiful smile. And unlike braces, these clear aligners can be removed while you eat and brush your teeth as usual. They are far more comfortable than braces, eliminating the pain associated with wire changes in fixed braces. The forces are gentler and kinder to your teeth. You’ll see your Invisalign Accredited Orthodontist or Dentist every 6 to 8 weeks for adjustments and to check progress. At regular intervals, you’ll receive a new set of custom-molded clear aligners to continue the straightening process. The total number of clear aligners is specific to you, determined by your doctor for your course of treatment.

The length of treatment varies according to how misaligned your teeth are. In general, a course of orthodontic treatment takes around one and a half to two years.

Please don’t hesitate to ask about our orthodontic services next time you’re in for your check-up. Having a beautiful smile is more achievable than you think!
